Nesting box calculator
Enter how many hens you keep for the recommended number of nesting boxes — based on the standard guideline of about one box per three to four hens.
Recommended boxes 2–3 at least 2 so an occupied box never blocks the rest
Don't be surprised if your hens ignore the math and all pile into one favorite box — that's normal. Extra boxes still reduce squabbling and egg breakage.
Common questions
- How many nesting boxes do I need for my chickens?
- About one box per 3–4 hens. Hens share boxes and usually crowd into one or two favorites anyway, so you rarely need one per bird. Provide at least two so a broody or occupied box never blocks the others.
- Is 3 nesting boxes enough for 12 chickens?
- Yes — at one box per 3–4 hens, 12 hens need about 3–4 boxes, so 3 is on the low end of fine and 4 is comfortable.
- What size should a nesting box be?
- Roughly 12×12×12 inches for standard breeds (a bit larger for big breeds like Brahmas or Jersey Giants, smaller for bantams). Place boxes lower than the roosts and keep them dim and well-bedded.
